AEROSPACE ART GAINS PROMINENCE at FLEET WEEK

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. - Fleet Week arrived in San Francisco with flying colors. In the past, this bastion of 60’s flower power has not clung to a reputation of being a military-friendly zone.

In 1981 then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein, now Senator, established Fleet Week an annual celebration to honor the men and women in service. The City By the Bay welcomed the Navy, Marines and Coast Guards with open arms.

Throngs of visitors collected on the edge of the bay, every boat, park and rooftop to catch a glimpse of the Fleet Week  2010 Airshow above the glistening bay, replete with vessels of every size and shape.

"ANGELS & DAREDEVILS"
AEROSPACE ART SHOW

by Stuart and Rouch

Another welcome addition to the festivities was a greater presence of Aerospace Art. Where last year, three paintings decorated the Navy in Space Exhibit at Fort Mason, this year two dozen original aerospace paintings by Mimi Stuart and Michelle Rouch graced the exhibit halls of the W Foundation’s Navy in Space Exhibit, the Private Preview Reception at Fort Mason, and the Chairman’s Blue Angels Reception at the Marines Memorial. Aviation Art set the backdrop for the ceremonies as Major General Michael Myatt introduced former Secretary of State George Shultz, Senator Diane Feinstein, an array of heavily decorated Marine officials and the Blue Angels team.

The art covered several subjects of aviation history, celebrating Naval Centennial with Eugene Ely’s first successful landing on the USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco, Buzz Aldrin’s first steps on the moon, John Herrington, the first Native American in space, and the Blue Angels in flight.
